Canada Implements Tariffs on Chinese Steel

The Canadian Government has announced that, like the United States, it will impose significant tariffs on imports of a wide range of steel and aluminum products from China.

The increased tariffs will go into effect on October 15, 2024.

Here is the announcement from the Canadian Government with the Harmonized Tariff codes of the products to be subjected to a tariff of 25%.  These include carbon, stainless, and alloy steel wire but not wire products. Also included are Chapter 72 and 73 schedules.

This is good news, in particular, for several Active Members on the West Coast who have complained about Canadian wire drawers importing Chinese rod at ridiculous prices and then shipping the processed wire and wire products into the U.S. market.

The Canadian Government also announced the imposition of a 100% tariff on electric vehicles and certain hybrid passenger automobiles, trucks, buses and delivery vans from China.

In addition, the Canadian Government will consult with other sectors, including manufacturers of batteries and battery parts, semiconductors, and solar products as well as suppliers of critical minerals, regarding a possible tariff increase on imports of those products from China.

The AWPA is monitoring this development and will provide more information as it becomes available.
