Section 232 – Global Steel Tariffs – 25% (and Aluminum – 10%)

  • August 14: Canada considers Safeguard measures (tariffs) on Steel plate, Hot-rolled sheet, Pre-painted steel, Energy tubular products, Wire rod, Concrete reinforcing bar and Stainless steel wire.  The Canadian Department of Finance is accepting comments through August 29th.
  • August 13: The US raised the tariff on imports of Turkish Steel to 50%, related to the house arrest of American Pastor Andres Brunson.  Turkey announced a retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including increasing tariffs by 120% on autos, 140% on alcohol and 50% on rice among others.
  • July 17: EU published a Steel Import Retaliation List, which includes rod and wire.
  • Product Exclusion Requests continue to be posted in large numbers. There are currently 36,438 postings to the Commerce Department website (at 3:30 pm Aug 17).  AWPA keeps a running List of Bar, Rod and Wire Product Exclusion Requests and Decisions along with a list of related Objections on the AWPA website.  See the article below for some ‘point in time’ data.
