Trump 2.0: Tariffs 2.0?
The recent election of former President Donald J. Trump to serve as the nation’s 47th President portends increased uncertainty about the future of U.S. trade policy. Certain trade and tariff programs initiated during President Trump’s first term are still intact. While those programs are expected to remain in place, certain modifications are possible and, in fact, likely.
Additionally, on the campaign trail – as well as since his election last month, President Trump has floated a variety of new proposed tariffs, often as negotiating leverage to accomplish his foreign policy objectives – from stemming immigration and the flow of illegal drugs to reshoring U.S. manufacturing and the associated jobs.
